Welcome to Majlis!

A team of women lawyers, social workers, academicians and activists who work for the protection and promotion of women and children’s rights through legal representation, advocacy and training.
Rahat offers legal and social support to women and children victims of sexual and domestic violence.
Flavia Agnes Centre for Learning is a multi-disciplinary hub for advancing knowledge, promoting research and fostering discourse on the intersection of gender, law and society.

Where It All Started

‘Majlis’ the name reflects our broad based pluralistic and multicultural ideology. The founder members of Majlis were part of the early women’s movement. The organisation is registered as a Society and Public Trust in 1991. Majlis legal centre was founded by Adv. Flavia Agnes, a legal scholar on women’s rights, as a centre for rights discourse and legal initiatives to address issues of women and children facing violence.

The organisation holds space for debate and discussion. The kind of support that is provided to women and children is holistic. I think it is important to provide a non-judgemental space to victims where they can speak freely and Majlis does just that.

Majlis doesn’t turn anyone away, it was apparent that the victims and their families find a safe refugee in the organisation knowing that there are people they could rely upon to provide them with the needed support along with the required information and not keep them in the dark regarding the proceedings and practicalities. The work gave me a moment to experience how to assess and provide what the clients require.

Ingrid Srinath is the founder Director of the Centre for Social Impact and Philanthropy at Ashoka University.

Syeda Hameed is a Feminist-Activist, former Planning Commission Member And writer.

Shilpa Phadke is a Professor & Author of Why Loiter? Women and Risk on Mumbai Streets (2011).

Shoba Venkatesh is a retired Professor of English Literature and was the head of the English department at Mumbai University.
